Maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle is key in helping people with Parkinson’s (PwPs) manage their condition. To achieve this, Bial, in partnership with Parkinson’s Europe, has developed a new online Training Area specially designed for PwPs.

Available in English, German, Portuguese and Spanish, the new Training Area builds on the Keep ON Moving exercise videos Bial and Parkinson’s Europe launched last year and is designed to help with all-round health and Parkinson’s management.

Launched for World Parkinson’s Day last month, it has sections on nutrition, voice training, physical exercise and cognitive training, featuring tutorials, videos, tips, recipes and games:

  1. Nutrition: Watch nutritionist Diana Miranda as she explains the importance of keeping hydrated and gives tips on managing common symptoms in Parkinson’s such as constipation. This section also features videos by chef Fábio Bernardino who recommends recipes for people with Parkinson’s, including adapted versions for those with difficulty swallowing.
  2. Exercise: Get moving with physiotherapist Josefa Domingos and John Dean, speech language pathologist, as they take you through challenging and engaging exercises for PwPs to do at home. The routines combine physical movement with voice training and cognitive challenges to offer maximum benefits for PwPs. Improve your capacity to perform two or more tasks during transfers, while maintaining good posture and during walking-related activities.
  3. Voice: Improve your communication skills and maintain your social life with voice exercises designed by speech therapist Rita Cardoso.
  4. Cognition: Strengthen your cognitive skills and keep your mind active with interactive online mental exercises and games created by Isabel Araújo.

Parkinson’s Europe Board member and physiotherapist Josefa Domingos, and John Dean, say: “By integrating voice and cognitive challenges into movement we better replicate the challenges PwPs face in daily life – for example, when walking and talking, eating and talking and preparing a meal while talking, and so on.”

Bial and Parkinson’s Europe plan to add to the content to create a wealth of resources carefully designed to cater to PwPs’ specific needs.
